Why is it Needed to Wipe Data and Cache While Flashing a Custom ROM?
Do you like this story?
Problem :
Do I need to wipe data and cache after every time i flash a new Clockwork Mod RECOVERY or Custom Rom on my Galaxy Mini?
Solution :
You don't need to wipe data and cache after flashing CWM recovery. However, as a general rule you will always need to wipe data and cache after flashing any custom rom on your android smartphone. It is done so, to make sure that you have no problem while booting the rom as well as when using the ROM in the future. Without proper data and cache wipe you might get errors such as applications force close and others.
However, if you are a advance user and are quite sure about what you are doing then, you don't need to wipe data while upgrading from one version to another within a same custom rom. You can just flash the rom and wipe cache only and reboot your device. For example : Updating from CyanogenMod RC5.5 to RC5.7 doesn't require you to wipe data but, upgrading to emanoN rom or some other rom from CyanogenMod do require you wipe data for greater compatibility and efficiency. But, in case you happen to come across some problems such as stuck at ANDROID logo then you will need to wipe data and cache by going back to recovery and then reboot your device again.
